Temporary Residence
Tourists, international students, and foreign workers are considered temporary residents. Canada has developed various pathways to allow such temporary residents to become Permanent Residents (PR) and remain in Canada permanently as a first step towards becoming Canadian citizens. Every year, thousands of temporary residents who studied or worked in Canada successfully obtain their Permanent Residency through one of Canada’s multiple immigration programs.
Canada welcomes more than 350,000 international students each year. Studying in Canada is one of the most popular pathways to Canadian Permanent Residency.

Canada is a prime destination for many foreign nationals who are seeking employment opportunities. There are many benefits to work in Canada. In most cases Canadian work permits enable the spouse and children of workers to accompany them and to work or study in Canada. Another significant benefit is that by gaining Canadian work experience, a foreign national will increase their eligibility to become Canadian permanent resident under many federal or provincial immigration programs.
The process of obtaining a work permit varies depending on the type of job and whether a visa is required. It can be as simple as showing up at the border or airport with the proper paperwork. But in most cases it is a complex, lengthy matter. Most work permit applications require that a foreign national has an official job offer from a Canadian employer which is supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to prove that there are no Canadians or permanent residents available to fill the position.

Whether you are coming to Canada as a guest, tourist, student or worker, you only have a limited period of authorized stay in the country. Guests and tourists are usually given a maximum stay of 6 months, while foreign workers and students typically have longer stay authorized by their work or study permits.
An extension of stay for a regular visitor is mostly straightforward, while a similar procedure for a foreign worker and student vary, and is dependent on their particular situation.
In majority of cases, you can extend your stay in Canada without leaving the country. It’s nothing more than an urban legend that the authorized period of stay can only be extended by leaving and re-entering Canada.

In most cases a Canadian employer must receive a positive Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to hire a worker from abroad. A Canadian employer has to apply for a LMIA and will ultimately hire a foreign specialist if a positive feedback is attained. This will warrant the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) the opportunity to work in Canada for the said employer.
There are a number of requirements that has to be met when applying for LMIA and they are likely to change quite often without notice. This is one of the difficulties associated with a LMIA as well as having the challenge of facing very detailed processing. Each and every application is processed with great attention to detail; any minor mistake can lead to a LMIA refusal.
We assist employers, their legal counsel and human resources with corporate immigration matters such as LMIA applications, business visitors, intra-company transferees and other statutory or treaty-based work permits. We understand the time constraints human resources departments are under to fill a position so we give this type of immigration work priority and can generally turn the paperwork around within a week.
